Discovering Maungauika North Head
Located on the North Shore of Auckland, Maungauika North Head is an extinct volcano that provides a fascinating glimpse into Auckland's military history. This site was a significant military facility from the 1890s through World War II. It features multiple gun emplacements from various periods, including a striking array of older guns that face across the Waitematā Harbour towards Downtown Auckland.
While Maungawhau Mt Eden is often the top choice for panoramic views of Auckland, Maungauika North Head provides a unique perspective with its prime harbour position and historical attractions.
Historical Features and Scenic Views
Maungauika North Head is rich in historical features. You can explore extensive barracks, lookouts, and an old underground engine room area. The site also includes accessible military tunnels that provide a unique insight into its past. Besides its historical significance, the location has some of the best views in Auckland. At sunset, you can enjoy stunning vistas of Downtown, Rangitoto Island, and distant Waiheke Island and the Coromandel. From the north side of the summit, there is a remarkable view along Cheltenham Beach.
It is also part of the North Shore Coastal Walk and Te Araroa, making it a perfect spot for those interested in both history and scenic beauty.
How to Get There
From Downtown, you can take a ferry to Devonport, which is a short, scenic ride across the Waitematā Harbour. Once in Devonport, it's a pleasant walk or a short drive to the base of North Head. The area is well-signposted, with some parking on the mountain and street parking.
