Narrow Neck

North Auckland

Narrow Neck is a popular, lovely, and safe inner-city swimming beach on the north side of the Devonport Peninsula. It is on the North Shore Coastal Walk / Te Araroa. You can continue around the coast to St Leonards Beach, below the cliffs to the west as the tide goes out if it’s too busy at Narrow Neck.

Narrow Neck is about the same length as Cheltenham, but it is backed by a park and a popular cafe, so it tends to be busier. To the east, above the cliffs, is Fort Takapuna on Takapuna Head.

The beach also has a military history. It was the site of a major training camp during WW2. Next to the cafe, there is a series of boards with photos from the period.

The beach can be accessed along Vauxhall Road from Cheltenham or Old Lake Road from Lake Road.
