Discover Cheltenham Beach
Cheltenham Beach, located north of Devonport and immediately northwest of Maungauika / North Head on the North Shore of Auckland, is a charming spot to visit. It features a beautiful golden sand urban beach, complemented by the historic architecture of restored Victorian and Edwardian houses. Opposite Rangitoto Island in the Hauraki Gulf, this beach has a sheltered environment and is perfect for swimming.
Ideal Times for Swimming and Exploring
Cheltenham Beach is relatively flat, with tides that recede significantly. For swimming, it's best to visit when the tide is in. However, if you're keen on exploring, the ideal time is when the tide is out. This allows you to walk around the rocky coast below the cliffs of Takapuna Head, starting from the west end of the beach.
How to Get There
You can access the beach from Takapuna via Lake Road, then Albert Road and Vauxhall Road at the north end, or from Devonport via King Edward Parade and Cheltenham Road at the south end. From Takapuna, it is a 10-minute, 6.1 km drive, but from Devonport, it is only a 1.6 km, 25-minute walk, making it feasible to access the beach via the Devonport Ferry from Downtown Auckland.
The beach also sits on the North Shore Coastal Walk and Te Araroa. From the southeast end, you can follow the trail onto Maungauika / North Head. Other nearby places to visit include Takarunga / Mt Victoria, Narrow Neck and St Leonards Beach.
