Wharariki Beach, south of Cape Farewell, is exceptional. On one 3 km section of beach, there are numerous natural arches and caves. For the perfect beach walk, throw in colourful cliffs with fossilised shells and seals, a beautiful loop walk across farmland, then along the beach and wind-blown dunes, and a sunset in front of the Archway Islands. A strong hint: Try to visit during low tide.
Most photos of the beach focus on the Archway Islands, which are undoubtedly an exceptional feature of the South Island. It only takes 30 minutes to walk from the car park to grab some Archway shots. However, visitors should allocate a day and slowly do the entire loop to benefit from this amazing place.
To get there, take State Highway 60 from Takaka in Golden Bay north to the turnoff to Farewell Spit. Turn left onto Wharariki Road and drive to the car park at the end. Follow the beach access signs.
There is also a modest commercial campground next to the car park.
