Ocean Beach and Fossil Point

Golden Bay

There is more than one “Ocean Beach” in NZ. This one is a long, empty, remote and spectacular beach at the northwest end of Farewell Spit. It is fringed by dunes, mostly covered in dune grass and native scrub. From the Farewell Spit car park, the fastest way to the beach is on Fossil Point Track.

To get to Fossil Point from the beach, cross the stream and head towards the cliffs at the west end of the beach. Below the cliffs is Fossil Point, a flat, dark, rocky outcrop. But some of the rocks immediately below the cliff are more interesting, having been carved by water and wind into a range of organic shapes.
