At the northern end of Golden Bay are Puponga Point and Port Puponga, which also marks the end of the main highway. There are a few houses and the remains of a wharf, basically just the stumps of the posts, which can be seen at low tide as a reminder of a more industrial past. It’s particularly photogenic at sunset.
If you go left onto the metal Wharariki Road from the main highway, you will reach the hamlet of Puponga. The cliff to the northeast is spectacular. The Puponga Hilltop Walk, which connects Farewell Spit to Wharariki Beach via Cape Farewell, runs along the top of the cliff.
