Cowin Road in Whanganui Inlet is 20 km of narrow metal road that more or less follows the coast southwest between Paturau River and the hamlet of Anatori. There is a ford on the Anatori River and the road continues for a few more km to the Turimawiwi River, but the ford was flooded on this trip.
This is a very beautiful stretch of remote road, passing mostly through rugged farmland with views of the spectacular coastline and beaches. There are also patches of native forest regrowth, with nikau palms particularly prominent. You can stop safely in several places and scramble to the beach before getting to Anatori.
