Paturau River and Its Unique Beach

Paturau River flows into the Tasman Sea on the northwest coast of the South Island, near the end of Dry Road and south of Golden Bay. This remote area, with a handful of houses, is a gem for those seeking natural beauty far from the crowd. A variety of polished and rounded stones on the beach near the river's mouth is a particular feature.

Beach and River Estuary

The beach at Paturau River is a striking feature of the area. At high tide, the beach is covered with a multitude of stones, each smoothed by the elements over time. As the tide recedes, a sandy expanse is revealed, perfect for leisurely walks. The river estuary adds to the landscape, and a large flat parking area is available behind he beach.

Unusual Rock Formations

Walking south along the beach, you will encounter intriguing rock formations. These rocks, ranging in colour from white to yellowish, offer a unique geological spectacle. Their unusual shapes and hues make them a fascinating subject for photography and exploration.

How to get there

To reach Paturau River from Collingwood, head north on Collingwood Puponga Main Road to Pākawau Inlet, then turn west onto Pakawau Bush Road, which takes you to Whanganui Inlet. At the inlet, follow Dry Road until you reach Paturau River. Cross the bridge onto Cowin Road, where you will find a short access road leading to a reserve in front of the beach and river mouth.

On the way, you can take a short detour to the Kaihoka Lakes. You can also explore south along even more remote Cowin Road to Anatori, stopping to check out Lake Otuhie and this incredibly beautiful coast.
