Exploring St Leonards Beach
St Leonards Beach is nestled on the Devonport Peninsula of the North Shore of Auckland. Known for its seclusion due to high cliffs and limited accessibility, it offers a unique escape from the city's bustle. Once best known as a nudist beach, it now attracts visitors seeking a quiet and safe spot to relax.
Accessing St Leonards Beach
Reaching St Leonards Beach requires a bit of effort, with a steep set of stairs at the end of St Leonards Road. Alternatively, you can walk from Narrow Neck or Takapuna Beach during low tide. Be aware that at high tide, the beach area is quite small, but it expands significantly as the tide recedes.
Natural Beauty and Features
The beach is framed by impressive, high white to golden cliffs and vibrant rock formations, creating a picturesque setting. The cliffs are even more striking if you walk a short distance north towards Takapuna. It is an ideal location for those looking to enjoy a tranquil city beach experience.
The beach is on the North Shore Coastal Walk, which is also part of Te Araroa.
How to Get There
To visit St Leonards Beach from Takapuna or Devonport, take Lake Road and look out for St Leonards Road on the north side of Takapuna Grammar School. Park at the end of the road, and the steep staircase is right there.
While in the area, consider exploring other nearby attractions along the North Shore Coastal Walk. These include Takapuna Head, Cheltenham Beach and Maungauika / North Head.
