The Pureora Forest North Entrance is off State Highway 30, which links Mangakino to the northeast with Te Kuiti to the northwest. The main nearby town is Barryville, and what was once the forestry town of Pureora is now Pureora Field Base, with some lodging. From State Highway 30, you can take Maraeroa Road or Barryville Road to the large parking area in front of the forest, near the start of the Timber Trail and Totara Walk. Ngaherenga West Campsite is right there, and the prettier Ngaherengs Campsite is a short distance along Barryville Road to the east. The Field Base, which includes basic self-catering accommodation, is a little west of the parking area on Village Road.
If you follow Barryville Road to the east, you will find the start of metal Link Road. This goes east across the park to the Kakaho Campsite, Rimu Track and State Highway 32. Link Road also provides the quickest access to the track to and around Mount Pureora and Titiraupenga.
A little further northeast on Barryville Road is metal Hill Road. This takes you to two sites with vintage forestry haulier machinery and Forest Tower Walk, famous for the tree sit-in at the height of conservation protests in the late 1970s.
Some old forestry roads are poorly marked, but Google Maps provides road names and key locations. The historic machinery sites are marked once you are on the right road.
