Link Road, Pureora Forest

Central Waikato

Link Road connects the Northwestern side of Pureora Forest Park to the northeast side. It starts from Barryville Road, east of the Timber Trail, Totara Walk trailheads, and car park. The road is about 22 km long and becomes Kakaho Road from near the Kakaho Campsite for the last 7 km to State Highway 32.

Link Road provides the full contrast of the park's experience. It passes through substantial ancient trees, and the Historic Crawler Tractor walk, about 2.5 km along the road, is worth the short walk. Other areas along the road are forest regrowth, while some have been or are currently exotic pine. Part of the road lies outside the park.

The road also provides access to tracks to the two high points - Mount Pureora at 1,165 metres and Titiraupenga at 1,042 metres. The tracks start on opposite sides of the road, about 14 km from the intersection with Barryville Road. Allow 2 hours total for Mount Pureora and 4 hours total for Titiparenga. Note that the dramatic top of Titiparenga is sacred to Māori and should not be climbed.

The short but stunning Rimu Track is at the end of the road beside the pretty Kokaho Campsite. On the other side of the road is farmland with some interesting rock formations.

The old forestry road is rough in places with many potholes. But take it easy, and it can be done in a 2WD car.
