Exploring the Rimu Track in Pureora Forest Park

Located in the northeast section of Pureora Forest Park, the Rimu Track is a moderate loop walk through a dense podocarp forest. Starting at the Kakaho Campsite, where Kakaho Road meets Link Road, this loop track is a superb ancient remnant forest, with many examples of big rimu trees.

Journey Through Ancient Forest

The Rimu Track begins by crossing the Kakaho Stream and then follows its bank for 400 metres. As you walk, you'll be surrounded by towering rimu trees and a rich undergrowth of moss, lichen, ferns, and epiphytes, creating a true rainforest atmosphere. The track crosses the stream again before ascending 60 metres to a hilltop viewpoint. Here, you can enjoy a view amidst large, majestic trees.

After taking in the views from the hilltop, the track leads you on a short walk back to the road. From there, you return along Kakaho Road to the campsite, completing the loop.

How to get to the Rimu Track

To reach the Rimu Track from State Highway 32, which runs along the east side of Pureora Forest Park, take Kakaho Road, which meets Link Road at the Kakaho campsite.

Other short walk options around the forest park include the Waihora Lagoon Track, on the east side of the park, and the Totara Track, the Forest Tower, and the Historic Crawler Track on the north side, accessed from Barryville Road.
