Discovering Pukematekeo
Pukematekeo is a prominent peak in the Waitākere Ranges, with some of the most expansive views in the area. Easily accessible via a short one-way road from Scenic Drive, the summit provides a nearly 360-degree panorama, including views across the ranges and towards Auckland. This makes it a must-visit for those seeking breathtaking vistas.
Spectacular Views and Natural Highlights
From the summit of Pukematekeo, you can gaze almost due south to spot the Waitākere Reservoir Dam. With a keen eye, you can spot the 95-metre Waitākere Falls, the tallest waterfall in the Waitākere Ranges, cascading from the dam into the Toetoeroa Stream. Although the Waitākere Reservoir Walk, which starts from Scenic Drive, leads to the top of the falls, access is currently restricted due to kauri dieback. Therefore, the view from Pukematekeo offers the best opportunity to admire the waterfall's dramatic descent.
How to get to Pukematekeo
Pukematekeo is towards the north end of Scenic Drive. From Downtown Auckland, take the western motorway to the Lincoln offramp, then head south on Lincoln Road, with a turn west on Universal Drive. Universal Drive becomes Swanson Road, which then changes to Scenic Drive. The drive takes around 25 km and takes 26 minutes.
Other nearby places to visit include Cascade Kauri, Spragg Bush, the Large Kauri Tree, Fairy Falls, and the Cutty Grass Track.
