The Wynyard Quarter is between the Viaduct and Westhaven Marina on the Downtown Auckland waterfront. It is a vibrant area with many apartments and modern commercial businesses. North Wharf and parallel Jellicoe Road have numerous eateries along the waterfront.
Historically known as the Western Reclamation, the area was reclaimed from Freeman’s Bay by the early 1900s. In the early 2000s, the area was a run-down industrial precinct with petrochemical storage facilities. The decision was made to redevelop it as a mixed-use space that is attractive to visitors. It is a big project, and there are still areas awaiting redevelopment. However, the area bounded by Madden Street and the waterfront is complete, along with Halsey Street on the east side of the quarter, which connects with the Viaduct. On the west side is Beaumont Street, which is long associated with Auckland yachting and boating and provides access to Westhaven Marina.
A feature of the quarter is Silo Park. This contains a cluster of six silos (Silo 6) and a single silo (Silo 7) that were historically used to store cement. The silos are 35m tall, and Silo 6 is used as an exhibition space, and Silo 7 is used at night for outdoor movies. To the west of Silo Park is the Silo Superyacht Marina, perfect if you love big expensive boats. To the north of Silo Park, SeaLink operates a car and passenger ferry service to Aotea Great Barrier Island. ASB Waterfront Theatre is another quarter feature on Halsey Street, around the corner from the waterfront restaurants.
A drawbridge connects the quarter to the Viaduct, but the bridge is presently undergoing maintenance.
