The Totara Walk is an easy 30-minute loop walk starting on Barryville Road at the Timber Trail entrance on the northeast side of Pureora Forest Park. The walk loops among tall ancient podocarps, including tōtara, rimu, mātai, miro, and kahikatea trees. Some of the big trees are around 1,000 years old. As a rainforest, it is also abundant in moss, lichen, creepers, ferns, and epiphytes. Overall, the walk is one of the best and most easily accessed examples of ancient pre-European forests.
The short walk also has good bird life, and you may hear or see tui, piwakawaka, kākāriki, tomtits, and robins. There are interpretative and plant identification signs throughout the walk, so a good chance to learn a few native plant names!
You will also find the Ngaherenga Campsite east of the trail on Barryville Road and Pureora.
