Kahikatea Walk

South Canterbury

The Kahikatea Walk is flat and easy, with boardwalks over the wetland areas. It runs between Te Wanahu Flat in the Peel Forest on the west side of Rangitata Gorge Road and loops through Clarke Flat and the campground next to the river. The loop runs partially in the open grassed areas of the flats and partly in regrowth forest, with the odd mature tree that avoided the saw. A visitor's shelter at Clarkes Flat has a large information panel describing flora, fauna, and conservation activities. It takes about an hour to walk the 1.9 km, and you can park at either of the flats.

Walking the track, you will see old signposted saw pits. The trees were cut and milled where they stood, and the regrowth on this track is all that is left of the kahikatea swamp forest. There are quite a few kowhai trees around the margins, which provide extra colour in Spring.

This walk can be easily connected to the short Acland Falls Track and Big Tree Walk from Te Wanahu Flat.
