The Big Tree Walk in the Peel Forest, South Canterbury, is an easy but fabulous walk that provides access to some of the best ancient trees in NZ. Along the track, there are mataī, kahikatea, and enormous tōtara, some of which are thought to be approximately 1,000 years old. The largest tree is a huge lowland tōtara, almost 3 metres in diameter. Panels provide descriptions and extra information on some of the trees.
The 15-minute, 870-metre loop starts and ends at Te Wanahu Flat on Rangitata Gorge Road. The track has a modest climb with some steps on one side, passing several big ancient trees. The other side is a mostly straight section with the remains of a bush tramway route running alongside the track. These tramways had wooden rails and were used for hauling logs to the sawmill.
The Big Tree Walk was probably part of the forest British MP Arthur Mills saved by buying it in the 1880s. Before you feel too kindly towards Arthur, read the brief bio here!
