Fossil Point Track starts at the western end of Golden Bay, South Island, at the entrance to Farewell Spit. It provides access to Ocean Beach and Fossil Point on the southwest side of the spit.
To access the track, turn right at the end of the main highway at Port Puponga to Farewell Spit. There is a large parking area after a kilometre, right next to the start of Farewell Spit on its south side.
From there, walk directly across the farm (on the marked trail) to the north side of the spit (about 30 minutes) to access Ocean Beach, facing the Tasman Sea. Note that the paddocks are very wet after rain. As you approach the beach, you will see a connecting track for the Puponga Hilltop Track, which goes to Cape Farewell and Wharariki Beach. You can also access this track directly from the car park.
You can follow a loop around the western end of the spit to Fossil Point, which takes 90 minutes to 3 hours, depending on how far you go before you cross over to Ocean Beach.
