The Alpine Scenic Route starts with State Highway 77 in Darfield. To get to SH77 from Christchurch, head out on State Highway 73, the West Coast Highway to Darfield. From there, SH77 heads to Rakaia and then southwest towards Geraldine. The best shortstop photo opportunities include Rakaia and around Mt Hutt and Mt Somers (the mountain and the town).
SH 77 terminates near Geraldine, and the Alpine Scenic Route continues as State Highway 79 to Fairlie, then as State Highway 8 to the turnoff to Aoraki on SH80.
