Discover the Muriwai Gannet Colony

Located on Otakamiro Point between Muriwai Beach and Maukatia Bay, the Muriwai Gannet Colony is a fascinating destination, easily accessible for almost everyone. From August to March, you can witness the remarkable life cycle of the gannets as they breed and raise their chicks. This period culminates in the young birds' daring leap off the cliffs to begin their journey to Australia. After a few years, the surviving adults return to establish their own nests, continuing the cycle.

Exploring the Colony

The path around the edge of the colony offers several excellent viewpoints, allowing you to observe the gannets up close. In some areas, the birds are just a metre away, seemingly unfazed by human presence. The southern viewpoint is particularly noteworthy, providing a prime spot to watch the gannets as they soar through the sky and navigate their landings.

Best Time to Visit

While the colony is a rewarding experience at any time of day, visiting at sunset adds an extra layer of beauty to the scene. The setting sun casts a warm glow over the landscape, enhancing the spectacle of the gannets.
