Exploring Muriwai Beach

Muriwai Beach, located near the Muriwai township on the west coast of Auckland, is a popular black sand beach destination for sunbathers, swimmers, and surfers. The beach's southern entrance is the most accessible, with parking and proximity to the town. This area is ideal for those looking to enjoy the sun and surf, with easy access to the beach's amenities.

Activities and Attractions at Muriwai Beach

As with all the Auckland west coast beaches, swimming is safest in areas patrolled by surf lifesaving clubs. The Muriwai club has been around for over 60 years and operates services at the south end of the beach from Labour Day weekend (late October) to the end of the Easter Holidays.

The southern end of Muriwai Beach is not only a hub for beachgoers but also an access point for vehicles heading north along the beach's 60 km stretch, accessible only at low tide.

This section of the beach is particularly stunning at sunset, providing excellent opportunities for photography. At low tide, you can access a cave and the rocky platform at the end of Otakamiro Point.

Local Amenities

While Muriwai township offers some basic services, including takeaways, options are limited. For a wider selection of food options, you can visit the nearby towns of Kumeu, Huapai, and Waimauku, which provide more extensive amenities.

How to Get to Muriwai Beach

To reach Muriwai Beach from Downtown Auckland, take the Western Motorway northwest towards Kumeu. Continue on State Highway 16 to Waimauku, then head west on Muriwai Road to the beach. The drive takes approximately 40 minutes.

You can also take a short drive from Muriwai on Waitea Road to Maukatia Bay, a lesser-known surf beach with a large natural tunnel and interesting ancient rock formations. But the best-known short walk is from Maukatia Bay to the Gannet Colony at the top of Otakamiro Point. This is best during spring and early summer.
