The south entrance of Muriwai Beach, Auckland, is right next to the Muriwai township. Most sunbathers and swimmers/surfers congregate near the southern entrance next to the town. This is the most accessible section of the beach, with nearby parking. You can also turn left onto Waitea Road for a short drive to Maukatia Bay around Otakamiro Point and the Muriwai Gannet Colony.
The beach's southern end is also accessible for vehicles to launch boats and continue north along its 60 km length (low tide only). It is beautiful at all times of the day, but sunset allows for the best photos.
Although the town is reasonable, there are limited local services, with the odd takeaway and cafe. However, there are plenty of options in nearby Kumeu, Huapai and Waimauku.
To get there from central Auckland, take the Western Motorway northwest to Kumeu, and then continue on State Highway 16 to Waimauku. From there, head west on Muriwai Road to the beach. Allow about 40 minutes for the drive.
