Large Kauri Tree

Discovering an Ancient Kauri in the Waitākere Ranges

Located in the Waitākere Ranges near Auckland, a hidden gem awaits those travelling along Scenic Drive. A sign marked "Large Kauri Tree" might not seem remarkable at first glance, but it leads to an impressive natural wonder. After a brief walk, you will find yourself standing before a majestic, ancient kauri tree.

A Rare Encounter with Nature

This kauri tree is older and more mature than those found on the Arataki Nature Trail. It is a rare opportunity to get close to such an ancient tree outside of the Cascade Kauri Park, which is situated further north in the range. The experience of standing near this towering giant is awe-inspiring.

How to Get There

To visit this ancient kauri, drive along Scenic Drive in the Waitākere Ranges between Fairy Falls and Parkinson Lookout. Keep an eye out for the sign indicating "Large Kauri Tree." The short walk from the road will lead you directly to the tree.

Nearby, you can also discover the Cutty Grass Track, Waitākere Reservoir, Spragg Bush Track, Rose Hellaby House and Pukematekeo.
