Continuing on State Highway 25 on the northeast coast of Coromandel from Kuaotunu takes you towards Matarangi and Whangapoua, divided by Whangapoua Harbour. Matarangi is a larger resort town with a lovely white sand beach. Whangapoua is smaller and arguably better known as the gateway to New Chums Beach.
This is unfair as it is yet another beautiful and relatively safe east coast surf beach. At the northwest end is a larger coastal estuary, perfect for beach reflection photos.
