Whangamōmona on the Forgotten World Highway

Whangamōmona is a small hamlet located about two-thirds of the way along the Forgotten World Highway (State Highway 43), en route from Taumarunui to Stratford in Taranaki. This quaint settlement is famous for its unique declaration of independence, a quirky historical event that adds to its charm. A visit to Whangamōmona is not complete without stopping at its iconic pub and hotel, which serves as a central hub for travellers.

A Unique Slice of History

Whangamōmona gained fame by declaring itself a republic due to a local government dispute. In 1989, a local government reorganisation moved the town from the Taranaki area to the Manawatu-Wanganui district. Residents responded by declaring themselves an independent republic, complete with a president and a biennial Republic Day in January. This has become a popular festival.

This playful act of independence is celebrated with local passports, which you can obtain as a memento of your visit. The pub, the only facility between the Lavender Cafe near Taumarunui and Stratford, is a must-visit spot for refreshments and a taste of local culture on the Highway.
