Exploring Waihi Beach
Located a short drive from Waihi, Waihi Beach is a stunning white sand surf beach stretching over 10 kilometres at the very northern end of the Bay of Plenty and bordering the Coromandel. The town of Waihi Beach is situated at the northern end, with a selection of cafes and restaurants. At the southern end, the beach transitions into Bowentown, where the beach is named Ocean Beach.
Beach Activities and Access
Waihi Beach provides ample space, even during peak times, making it an ideal spot for swimming and relaxation. The main swimming areas are located at both ends of the beach and at Island View, about halfway along the beach. Surf patrols operate from the end of November to Easter at Waihi Beach and mid-December to the end of February at Island View and Bowentown.
As you travel along Seaforth Road, which runs parallel to the beach, you'll find several parking areas. From there, there are tracks through the coastal shrubs and dunes to more secluded areas of this long beach.
From the north end of the beach, you can also access the Orokawa Bay Track to beautiful Orokawa Bay.
How to Get There
To reach Waihi Beach, take Waihi Road from the town of Waihi. This short 8-minute, 10 km drive will lead you directly to the northern end of the beach.
Other places to visit in the area include the Karangakake Reserve for its walks and gold history, Mount Maunganui, and the Coromandel east coast to the north, including Whiritoa, Whangamata, Onemana, and Opoutere.
