Tuteremoana: The Peak of Kāpiti Island
Tuteremoana, the highest point on Kāpiti Island, stands at 521 metres and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. This peak provides a unique vantage point to appreciate the natural beauty of the Kāpiti Coast. The area is well-sheltered by high native bushes on the east side and chest-high shrubs on the west, creating a great environment for a picnic.
Features of Tuteremoana
The summit of Tuteremoana is a moderately sized flat area, perfect for a leisurely visit. Several native shrubs adorn the peak, some featuring tiny, subtle flowers typical of New Zealand's flora. Picnic tables are available, making it an ideal spot for a break after the steep hike up. Additionally, a viewing platform offers an elevated perspective, enhancing the panoramic views.
Spectacular Views
The west side of Tuteremoana features a near-vertical drop, but the presence of shrubs provides a natural barrier. The views from this peak are nothing short of spectacular, especially towards the north and west over the Tasman Sea. Climbing the viewing tower offers an all-encompassing view back to the Kāpiti Coast, making it a highlight for photographers.
How to Get There
To reach Tuteremoana, access Kāpiti Island by ferry service from Paraparaumu Beach. This requires prior booking due to limited visitor numbers. Once on the island, the Trig Track and the Wilkinson Track lead to the summit of Tuteremoana. The tracks are well-marked and offer a rewarding hike through native bush, culminating in the stunning views from the peak. Note that Trig Track is the tougher option.
While on Kāpiti Island, explore the Visitor Centre, the Rangatira Loop Track and Rangatira Bay. You can also arrange to stay overnight with the chance of seeing kiwi and further walks at the north end of the island.
