Tākaka

Golden Bay

Tākaka is the largest town in Golden Bay. It sits on State Highway 60 on the west side of Tākaka Hill and is about a one-hour drive to the end of the road at Wharariki on the northwest coast of the South Island. To the northeast are the golden beaches of Golden Bay and the west side of Abel Tasman National Park, accessed on Abel Tasman Drive.

The town has long morphed from a simple farm town to the centre for tourism around Golden Bay. There is a good selection of cafes and restaurants, a range of accommodation options, and attractive local galleries. Easily accessible nearby attractions include the short but stunning Grove Track and Te Waikoropupū Springs.
