Exploring the Bays of Coromandel: Stingray Bay and Gemstone Bay
Nestled between Hahei and Cathedral Cove on the Coromandel Peninsula, Stingray Bay and Gemstone Bay offer unique coastal experiences. These bays are both accessible by boat, and Gemstone Bay will be reachable from Summer 2025 on a short side track from the Cathedral Cove Walk. The two bays provide distinct attractions for those exploring the coast north of Hahei.
Gemstone Bay: A Snorkeller's Paradise
Despite its name, Gemstone Bay is characterised by large stones and rocks rather than gems. However, it is known as the premier spot for snorkelling and diving along this stretch of coast. The underwater scenery and marine life make it a must-visit for aquatic enthusiasts.
Stingray Bay: A Secluded Beach Retreat
Stingray Bay presents a more typical Coromandel east coast beach experience, but stands out due to the striking white cliffs that almost encircle it. This natural feature and striking blue water create a secluded atmosphere, making it an excellent alternative to the often-crowded Cathedral Cove, especially on busy days.
How to Get There
To reach Stingray Bay and Gemstone Bay, you can travel by boat from nearby Hahei. For walkway access to Gemstone Bay (once it reopens), take Grange Road from Hahei township to the start of the Cathedral Cove Walk. You can walk up the road, or be dropped off at the top, but there is no parking at the track access. You can also walk up a track to the top of the road from the north end of Hahei Beach. Allow an extra 20 minutes to walk up. From there, follow the main trail for about 20 minutes to the turnoff to Gemstone Bay.
From Hahei, you can also walk to a historic pā site with spectacular views at Hereheretaura Point. Within short drives, you can also discover Hot Water Beach, Cooks Beach, Shakespeare Cliff and Lonely Bay.
