StreamDiscover the Pūtangirua Pinnacles
Located between Lake Ferry and Cape Palliser, the Pūtangirua Pinnacles are a must-see for geology enthusiasts. These striking rock formations are among the most spectacular in New Zealand.
Starting the Hike
From the car park, some rock formations are visible, but for the best views, embark on the hike. The trailhead is marked by a sign at the end of the car park. Follow the riverbed, navigating around muddy spots, for about fifteen minutes until you reach a junction for the Ridge Trail.
The Pinnacles Ridge Track to Scenic Views
The ridge track offers a traditional New Zealand bush hiking experience through native forest and along the ridge line. Be cautious if you have a fear of heights, as there are steep drop-offs along the path. The lookout point features a wooden platform providing a direct view across the valley to the Pinnacles. It is only 1.5 km each way, but allow up to 90 minutes return for the walk.
There used to be an option to walk along the river to the base of the Pinnacles, but this is closed due to erosion and the risk of falling rocks.
Geological Wonders
The Pinnacles are made up of soft clay and gravel. Over eons, the Pūtangirua Stream has eroded deep gullies into the clay and gravel, but large boulders in the material created caps that protect the soft gravel directly underneath from eroing, resulting in the pinnacles. Many of the pinnacles have now lost their capping rocks and will progressively erode.
As you walk, look for fossilised shells embedded in the river rocks and the distinctive blueish-grey clay.
Safety Tips
The Pūtarangi Stream is prone to flash floods during storms. In addition to closing the lower track access, it can make the access to the Ridge Track unpleasant and even dangerous with accelerated erosion and rockfalls. It is best to stay away in heavy rain. In addition, don't park too close to the edge of the f the car park by the stream, as this is also erosion-prone.
Getting to the Putangirua Pinnacles
To reach the Putangirua Pinnacles, drive towards Cape Palliser. The car park is located past the first grassy pullout on the road. As you approach, drive past the initial grassy pullout and park in the gravel area to begin your adventure.
