Exploring Warrens Creek Track
Warrens Creek Track, located on Aotea Great Barrier Island, is a lovely walk through forest regrowth and past picturesque waterfalls. This track is perfect for those who enjoy a short hike with natural water features, including a swimming hole and the chance to spot local wildlife, including eels.
Track Description
The track starts opposite the entrance to the Akapoua Campground, accessible via Kaiaraara Road, just south of Port Fitzroy. The track initially leads you through a forest for about 20 minutes until you reach a modest waterfall. Continuing along the stream and climbing about 40 metres, you'll encounter a larger, two-level waterfall. The first level is accessible and features a good-sized swimming hole, ideal for a refreshing dip.
After enjoying the waterfalls, the track ascends a series of steps to a ridge. Although the ridge does not provide significant views, the walk through a section of exotic pines adds some variety to the landscape. The track then descends back to the road, approximately 300 metres from the starting point. Completing the circuit typically takes around 45 minutes.
How to get there
To reach Warrens Creek Track from Claris, take Gray Road northwest, which becomes Aotea Road. Follow this all the way to Port Fitzroy, where the road becomes Kairarara Road as it follows the edge of the harbour. Park at the Akapoua Campground. The track's entrance is on the other side of the road.
Other places to visit around Port Fitzroy include the Old Lady Walk and the Glenfern Sanctuary. On the way to Port Fitzroy, you can explore Awana Bay, Haratoanga Bay, Windy Canyon, and Whangapoua Bay.
