Discovering Waitonga Falls on Mount Ruapehu
Located on Mount Ruapehu, Waitonga Falls is a captivating destination that rewards those who venture beyond the initial view. While the falls may initially appear as a gentle stream flowing over a cliff face 100 metres upstream, the real beauty lies in the hidden smaller waterfalls that cascade into a large amphitheatre below. The sight of water flowing over vibrant green moss and lichen, contrasted with the colourful rock formations, creates a stunning visual experience.
Exploring the Amphitheatre
To fully appreciate Waitonga Falls, take the time to explore beyond the main track. As you make your way up the stream towards the large boulders, you'll encounter the first of the smaller falls, set against a lush green backdrop. Navigating around these boulders, with their own small waterfall, will lead you into the amphitheatre. Here, at least three streams converge from different directions, including the main one visible from the track, offering a serene and picturesque setting.
How to Get There
To reach the Waitonga Falls Track, head approximately 15 km up Ohakune Mountain Road. This access point will lead you to the start of the track, where your journey to discover the hidden beauty of Waitonga Falls begins.
