Tryphena on Aotea Great Barrier Island is a wide, relatively open bay. There are small hamlets at Gooseberry and Mulberry and a scattering of houses around to Shoal Bay. The main wharf facility, where the Sealink car ferry docks, is at Shoal Bay. There are a couple of stores, an excellent cafe, an Irish pub, and other options for fish and chips and burgers if you are eating out. But check availability and hours of operation; it will seem random to the average tourist!
The main road follows the coast closely around the harbour. It is a pretty drive, with ancient pōhutukawa trees, nice beaches between the cliffs, and good viewpoints. There is also a footpath, so you can walk rather than drive. Our favourite was sitting above the beach opposite the Stonewall Store with a snack and coffee.
