Takaparawha Point

East Auckland

There is little information and no signage for the Takaparawha Point historic gun emplacements overlooking Tamaki Drive, Okahu Bay and the Waitamatā Harbour. However, they are easy to access from the entrance to Bastion Point on Hapimana Street. Shortly after you turn into the street from Tamaki Drive, a small car park is on your right. From there, walk up the unmarked but obvious track through regenerating native shrubs to the top of Takaparawha Point. The reserve is also a mix of replanted natives and grassed areas, and the gun battery emplacements are easy to spot. Some have been graffitied, but others have had murals painted on the insides.

The battery was part of a network of eleven anti-aircraft batteries built in Auckland during WWII. It was built in 1942 but decommissioned by 1944 when it was clear the Japanese threat had dissipated. The battery consisted of four emplacements and one command post and is one of only two still intact and accessible.
