Rocky Bay

Hauraki Gulf Islands

Rocky Bay (Whakanewha Bay) is the coastal feature of the Whakanewha Regional Park on Waiheke Island. It is located on the island's south side, so the beach is shelly and stony, with extensive mud flats as the tide goes out. The best time to swim is at high tide. A grassy reserve behind the beach includes picnic areas and toilet facilities. Behind the reserve is a strip of established native coastal forest, followed by extensive regenerating forest and walking tracks heading inland.

At the south end of the beach is the Poukaraka Flats Campsite. The campsite is accessed from Gordons Road, and the Poukaraka Wetlands are to the east, with a short access track. To the north of the campsite is the historic pā site. The north end of the beach includes a well-defined and protected dotterel breeding ground. This starts next to the Sculpture Car Park beach entrance, off Gordon Road.

The Sculpture Car Park provides access to other tracks, including the lovely Nikau Track to the text.
