Omarami is a small, barely noticeable hamlet halfway between Baylys Beach and Aranga Beach on the Kauri Coast. It sits in a gap between the dunes and cliffs fronting Ripiro Beach, providing access by foot and for vehicles. There is a stream to cross, which is easy by foot and low-risk with a high 4WD. But the stream can be sufficiently deep to make it tricky in a 2WD.
The beach, surrounding dunes, and the orange-coloured cliffs are spectacular. As with other parts of Ripiro Beach, the tide goes out a long way, leaving gorgeous gold-coloured sand with black patterns. If you want to swim, stick to an incoming tide. If you have a car, you can drive in either direction - north to Aranga Beach or south to Baylys or Glinks Gully.
To get to Omamari from State Highway 12, continue on Omamari Road, past the turn-off to Kai Iwi Lakes on a 5 km metal road. There is also freedom camping in the reserve at the end of the road. Take care if you have a large camper van in the reserve, as there is a soft sand surface in places.
