The New Chums Walkway / Wainuiototo in the Coromandel starts from the car park at the northeast end of Whangapoua. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the well-loved New Chums Beach, but the walk is worth it.
It is a gorgeous short walk along the tidal stream at the northwest end of Whangapoua, then along the stony coastal edge. This section is best done outside of high tide. You then walk over a low saddle through a lovely grove of nikau palms down to the beach.
At the top of the saddle, you can access a steep, rugged climb up to the southeast end promontory (confident hikers only), with views along the beach. But it is being on the beach that counts.
