Monowai Lookout track is a short, easy walk in Fiordand National Park, through a beautiful mature beech forest from the Lake Monowai car park and campsite to a view over the lake. Many parts of the walk are covered in an intensely green coating of moss and lichen.
It is over 1 km long and takes about 20 minutes each way. The viewpoint has some picnic tables and bench seats. Look for various forms of funghi, fallen logs and lichens, and the odd left-behind stone with a painting or message!
The walk is a perfect adjunct to a visit to the lake and an accessible introduction to the beech forests of Fiordland National Park. To get there, continue on Lake Monowai Road, which intersects with Borland Road. Additional short walks on more remote Borland Road, including the Borland Nature Walk and the Mt Burns Tops Track at Borland Saddle.
