Discover Mahuia Rapids

Located along the Volcanic Loop Highway, State Highway 47, Mahuia Rapids is a captivating spot worth a brief visit. Near the intersection with SH 48, you'll find a sign directing you to the rapids. Although there is no designated track, the parking area is close, allowing you to experience the powerful rush and continuous roar of the water. The surrounding area is rich with dense bush, and you'll notice intriguing moss-covered rocks near the first car park.

Navigating the Access Road

Be aware that the access road to the parking bays is more of a deeply pot-holed mud track. This may present challenges for some vehicles, so plan accordingly. Despite this, the short stop at Mahuia Rapids provides a rewarding experience with its natural beauty and the soothing sound of the rapids.

Other nearby options include Te Porere Redoubt, Tawhai Falls and the Bruce Road. Much more adventurous options include hikes to Ruapehu Summit, the Tongariro Crossing and the multi-day Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail.
