Tawhai Falls is one of several walks from the Bruce Road in Tongariro National Park on the way to Whakapapa. A modest parking area is about 2.5 km up the road from State Highway 47. From there, follow the mostly flat track through mountain forest and shrubs for about 10 minutes, then take some stairs to the stream. There is a view of the 13-metre falls from this point, but you can quite easily walk over the rocks upstream to the pool below the falls.
There is also a short side track to a cliff edge viewpoint above the falls and stream immediately before the stairs.
