Kauri Glen Reserve is in the North Shore, Auckland suburb of Northcote and has one of the best features of the various North Shore kauri reserves: an 18-metre high, 60-metre treetop walk. The reserve consists of a deep gully with numerous kauri and tānekaha trees. Because of the kauri, the tracks have been substantially altered and upgraded. The result is a superb walk over a that spans the gully and brings you into the treetops. Some trees are around 300 to 400 years old. They are not the oldest kauri in Auckland (check out Leigh Scenic Reserve and Cascade Kauri for these), but they are a delight!
There are several entrances, but the best is from Kauri Glen Road, a suburban street off Onewa Road. Parking options are limited on all the suburban streets near the access points, so you may need to walk a distance or use a bus that stops on Onewa Road.
The reserve is also part of Te Ara Awataha Greenway. This follows the Awataha Stream for 1.5 km, connecting Northcote town centre with the surrounding communities. Most of the stream was buried in the 1950s with housing development, although it can come back to life in heavy rain!
