Claris is one of several hamlets on Aotea Great Barrier Island and the closest to the airport. It has a cool hamburger bar (Swallow), an excellent cafe, a couple of shops (one with a petrol bowser from the 1970s), curious museums and galleries, and a few tourist service businesses.
But its best feature is the 1970s eclectic beachy, surfy Kiwi vibe. You have to go there to believe it!
