Rock Formations of the North Shore

The North Shore of Auckland is home to captivating rock formations and cliffs, particularly along the North Shore Coastal Walk, also a section of Te Araroa. The stretch between Campbells Bay and Murrays Bay is especially intriguing.

When the tide recedes, a series of modest rock platforms emerges, leading from the path to the low tideline. These platforms, occasionally interspersed with golden sand, have been uniquely shaped by erosion, each displaying its own distinct form and colour variations.

The Allure of Geology

The diverse rock formations along this coastal walk are a testament to the area's geological history. Each platform has been smoothed and sculpted by natural forces, creating a fascinating landscape. While a background in geology might enhance your appreciation of these formations, the visual spectacle alone is enough to captivate any visitor.

How to Get There

From Downtown Auckland, you can drive or take public transport to reach Campbells Bay. Take the northern motorway to the Tristram Avenue off-ramp and head east on Tristam Avenue to Forest Hill Road. Head north on Forest Hill Road, followed by a short section east on East Coast Road to Aberdeen Road. Follow Aberdden Road north to Beach Road. Take the Esplanade to park close to the northern end of the beach. Allow about 30 minutes each way to explore this section of the North Shore Coastal Walk.

You can explore other parts of the North Shore Coastal Walk. Head south to Red Bluff and Kennedy Park, and north beyond Murrays Bay to Browns Bay and Torbay.
