Exploring New Chums Walkway
Located at Whangapoua on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, the New Chums Walkway is a scenic path leading to the stunning New Chums Beach / Wainuiototo. This easy 30-minute walk provides a blend of coastal and nikau forest landscapes.
A Scenic Coastal Walk
The walkway begins at the car park at the northeast end of Whangapoua. From the car park, you will cross the tidal stream and follow a path along the mainly forested edge of the beach, which becomes stony as it heads towards Motuto Point. This section is best navigated outside of high tide. The trail then ascends over a low saddle, where you'll pass through a charming grove of nīkau palms before descending to the beach.
Optional Climb for Panoramic Views
For those seeking a bit more adventure, a short but steep and rugged climb is accessible from the top of the saddle. This climb leads to the southeast end promontory, 72 metres above the beach, and is recommended only for confident hikers. From here, you can enjoy expansive views along the beach. However, the true highlight is spending time on the beach itself.
How to Get There
From State Highway 25, at Whangapoua Harbour, between Whitianga and Coromandel Town, turn north onto Whangapoua Road, which becomes Tangiora Avenue, then Mangakāhia Road as it runs down the main street behind Whangapoua Beach. Parking is available at the end of the road. The drive is approximately 24 minutes from Coromandel Town, 40 minutes from Whitianga, and just over 3 hours from Downtown Auckland.
Other famous Coromandel beaches that you need to walk to are Cathedral Cove and Orokawa Bay.
