The Whanganui River Road by Bike
The Whanganui River Road, starting from Pipiriki and ending at State Highway 4 near Upokongaro, is a captivating segment of the Mountains to Sea cycle trail in New Zealand. This 67-kilometre route offers cyclists a unique journey through remote landscapes, with numerous viewpoints providing stunning vistas of the Whanganui River and its surrounding valley. A notable feature of this trail is a significant hill climb near the end, rewarding cyclists with a breathtaking view back down the river.
Note that the road, although sealed, is undulating and rough in places, so be prepared for a challenging yet rewarding ride.
Historic Settlements Along the Route
As you travel along the Whanganui River Road, you'll pass through several historic small settlements. These communities often have local Māori names that are transliterations of major international cities. Among them, Jerusalem / Hiruhārama, stands out. This settlement is particularly intriguing due to its church and religious centre, which add a layer of cultural and historical depth to the journey.
How to Get There
The Whanganui River Road on the Mountains to Sea cycle trail is reached by jet boat from the Kaiwhakauka section of the track. You can also drive or bike into Pipiriki on the Pipiriki Raetihi Road from Raetihi on State Highway 4.
From Upokongaro on State Highway 4, continue to Whanganui by taking the cycle bridge to the west side of the river.
