Mercer Bay Loop

West Auckland

This is a popular walk in the Karekare to Piha part of the Waitakere Ranges. The easiest access is from Log Race Rd, off the end of Ahuahu Rd, above Piha. There is quite a large parking area at the historic site of a WW2 radar station.

From there, head along the west side track, then follow the cliff line to a fantastic viewpoint on Te Ahua Point. This was also the site of a Māori pā, and there are information panels and a large carving to mark this spectacular location. At various points, you can look back to Piha, down to Mercer Bay and along the southern coast past Karekare towards Whatipu.

The hike back up on the east side of the loop is moderately steep and strenuous. It mostly looks back across the Waitakere Ranges.

The loop back to the car park takes about 90 minutes, and you can experience some of the best coastal views in Aotearoa, NZ.
