Exploring Kidds Bush
Kidds Bush is located at the northern end of Lake Hāwea, below 1,814 metre high Sentinel Peak in the Southern Lakes region. This area is spectacular, with a DOC campground in a grassy area right next to the lake, a picturesque beach, two engaging forest walks and all-around mountain views. It is the perfect spot for a break or a stay.
Nature Walks and Hiking Trails
Adjacent to the campground, you can explore two distinct walking tracks. The text is a short loop that provides an introduction to the mature native beech rainforest, offering a gentle and educational stroll. For a more challenging hike, the Sawyer Burn Track ascends from the Nature Track nearly 600 metres above the bush line on the southeast ridge of Sentinel Peak, eventually leading to the Sawyer Burn Hut.
It takes about 5 hours return to get to the hut, but it's only an hour or so to the bushline. From there, the views are outstanding.
How to get there
To reach Kidds Bush from Wānaka, take State Highway 6 along the west side of Lake Hāwea. Just before you complete the crossing of the Ithmus to the east side of Lake Wānaka, take gravel Meads Road north. This route will lead you directly to the campground. Note that the road can also be a bit rough after bad weather.
Other activities along this part of State Highway 6 include the Hāwea River Track to the south, the nearby Ithmus Peak Track, and Camp Creek and Waterfall Creek to the north.
