The drive to Kaikōura on State Highway 1 is particularly scenic from Cheviot. Flat river valleys are followed by winding hills, then by the Pacific Ocean coastal road to Kaikōura South Bay.
The South Bay is a place of contrasts. It starts as a wide sweeping bay with fantastic views to the southwest, then becomes a series of rock platforms as you approach the southeast end of the Kaikōura Peninsula. The rock platforms are particularly interesting. Park in the reserve at the end of the road and start wandering around. It's best done as the tide goes out.
