Discovering Hurunui Mouth

The Hurunui River begins in Harper Pass in the heart of the Southern Alps and flows east to the Pacific Ocean, which it enters at Hurunui Mouth in North Canterbury. It provides a rustic escape with its rugged rural and coastal surroundings. While it may not seem remarkable at first glance, the area provides for camping, fishing, and boating. Beyond the small settlement, there is a campsite that serves as a perfect base for exploring the region.

Exploring the Remote Beach

One of the highlights of Hurunui Mouth is the opportunity to access a remote and wild strip of beach. This unnamed beach, accessible by crossing the river near the campground, offers a sense of seclusion and untouched beauty. It's an ideal spot for those seeking a quiet retreat away from more crowded locations.

The Hidden Lagoon

Although not visible from the riverside near the campground, the Hurunui River expands into a large lagoon before it meets the ocean. This lagoon is nestled between the beach and the northern cliffs, adding to the area's scenic charm.

How to Get There

To reach Hurunui Mouth, from State Highway 1, turn onto Hurunui Mouth Road. Follow the road past the Scenic Drive sign, which is located two-thirds of the way to Gore Bay, and continue onward. The journey leads you directly to the hamlet and its surrounding attractions.
