Arataki Nature Trail

Discover the Arataki Nature Trail

Located in the Waitākere Ranges, the Arataki Nature Trail provides an accessible opportunity to explore native New Zealand forest. Starting from the Arataki Visitor Centre car park, the trail is accessible via a tunnel under Scenic Drive. This walk, which takes less than an hour at a leisurely pace, provides stunning views over the forest canopy, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.

Explore Mature Kauri Trees

At the end of the main trail, visitors will find a remarkable group of relatively mature kauri trees. This stand is significant as it is one of the few publicly accessible groups of mature kauri trees that survived the extensive destruction of the Waitākere kauri forests over a century ago. Other substantial trees can be seen in the Cascades, Fairy Falls and the very short Large Kauri walk on the side of Scenic Drive.

Learn About Native Flora

In addition to the main trail, there is a short loop walk where visitors can learn to identify native trees. Nametags along the path help in recognising various species, enhancing the educational aspect of the walk.

How to Get There

Head along Scenic Drive from Tiitirangi to the Arataki Visitor Centre car park. From there, access the trail by walking through the tunnel under Scenic Drive.

From the Arataki Visitor Centre, you can also do a loop by connecting the Beveridge to the Pipeline and Slip Tracks.
